Why You Should Pay Bills on Time

Many of us are aware that when our bill statements whether for electricity, telephone, water and credit cards at home arrive, there’s a due date clearly stated in the document. This means that your outstanding balance should be paid on or before that specified date. Otherwise, other charges will already be carried out and what happens next is you’re going to have to pay a higher amount.

Responsible homeowners who stay away from debts see to it that they pay their bills promptly. Unfortunately, not everybody can keep up with this and sometimes because of lack of funds, there are people who can no longer afford to pay those bills on a timely manner.

The credit card bills are often what many people find difficult to handle. Frequent users of this plastic card who have accumulated a large balance surely feel the pressure. Some who are not knowledgeable about the charges involved often get surprised with the large balance stated in their bills.

Latest financial reports say more than 1.5 million Australians have gained unfavorable credit records owing to their debts and overdue bills. A recent survey showed that in the state of Victoria alone, people who lagged in paying their telephone, gas, electricity, water and credit card bills as well as their loans are already in the hundreds of thousands specifically 350,000. According to the report published in the Herald Sun, financial counselors are also expecting to get more assistance from people finding it hard to pay their basic utility bills this year.

Normally, a person can be in default when he or she is not able to pay a bill or $100 or more after the amount has been overdue for one and a half months. The record is then filed for five years with the person in default not being able to acquire new credit or will have great difficulty applying for a new loan.
The lesson to learn here then is to be a good payer. If you think about it, you were able to avail of a credit line or an important utility which people should supposedly value as well. Since you were given the opportunity to avail of credit or use utilities in your home, it’s your responsibility then to pay what you owe those companies on a timely and not just dilly-dally on it. Being aware of your financial obligations is very important because it is one way of staying away from debt and leading a peaceful life. Because drowning in debt is always a nightmare as many people who’ve been in this situation can attest to.

In these times when the government and other financial institutions are becoming more stringent in lending money, it is up to the consumers then to commit to their financial responsibilities. By being a good payer, for instance, you gain a good credit standing and you can ask for a lower interest rate than what companies are offering to people with bad credit records. In other words, you are at an advantage if you work hard to handle your finances well.
